For a few weeks prior to election day, we tried to (briefly) explain the voting process and the role of the president to Avery. By the time the day rolled around, we had her pretty pumped up about going to vote...so much so that she was dancing around with anticipatory excitement as we were getting ready to walk to our voting center. She went into the booth with me, and I let her push all the buttons necessary to cast my vote...(which she thought was awesome). When Jeff and Noel were finished voting, we headed outside and loaded the kids back into their wagon. As we started walking back home, the following conversation occured:
Avery: "Are we going for the boat ride, now?"
Jeff: "What boat ride, sweetie?"
Avery: You said we were going to a boat..."
Jeff: "Ohhh...no...I said we were going to vote...v-v-vote...not to a boat."
Avery: (sitting with a puzzled look on her face)
Jeff: "We had to vote for who we want for our next president...remember talking about that?"
Avery: "Yes...but I want to go on a boat ride..."
Today is Inauguration Day, and Avery is so excited! She is happy that we are getting "a new boss for Avery World" (can you say "egocentricism?") and has been marching around the house all morning chanting "Rock Ba-ha-ma, Rock Ba-ha-ma, Rock Ba-ha-ma..."
During one of her passes through the living room, she abruptly stopped marching, watched the television (which was showing Inauguration Day coverage) for a few moments, and then whipped her head around to look at me.
Avery: (with a quizzical look on her face) "Is he the nice man I pushed the button for?"
Me: "Yes, that's Barack Obama. He is who you voted for to be our president...and he won...remember?"
Avery: "Rock Bahama won? Oh...good. Does that mean he is going to take us on the boat ride, now?"
