We wanted to allow the kids to participate in the creation of our jack-o-lanterns a little more this year...without supplying a toddler and a preschooler with knives. To accomplish this, we armed each of them with a golf tee and a mallet and let them hammer holes in their pumpkins. Avery wanted to hammer a pattern into her pumpkin, while Noel's mallet-wielding turned into a willy-nilly free-for-all. I sketched a cat's face (our kitty-lover's choice, of course) on Avery's pumpkin, and then she calmly and carefully hammered holes along the lines to create her masterpiece (though she did tire of the process before she completed the design). Noel, on the other hand, was a wild man. He got very, VERY hammer-happy! He hammered his head...his
pumpkin...his tee while it was lying on the table...the tee when it was in Jeff's hand on the way to the pumpkin...Jeff's hand while he was holding the tee up to the pumpkin. Unfortunately, the first time Noel "accidentally" hammered Jeff's hand, he (Jeff) said "ouch!" in a way that was very entertaining to Noel, and, so, focused carving was over...the new game was "make Daddy make the funny noise, again." Oh well...they had fun...
After the kiddos went to bed, Jeff and I finished their jack-o-lanterns for them. I poked a gazillion more holes in Noel's pumpkin, and Jeff carved Avery's by connecting all of the "dots" she had hammered. Here are the final products...
I think they turned out pretty good...and they were perfect mood lighting for our after dinner hot chocolates on the nights leading up to Halloween!
